C2E2 Comic Book Convention 2010 Chicago

Introduction

Here it is everybody, X-tropia.com's gigantic, hilarious and sexy review of the C2E2 comic convention in Chicago. Once again yours truly had the honor of helping my friend Josep Blas with his Space Punk's table. Just a few weeks ago we traveled to San Francisco to participate in the San Francisco WonderCon. But I think C2E2 was even better.!

C2E2 was held at the Chicago McCormick Place. This is the first time I saw this place and it's practically it's own city. It was so big I almost got lost. Luckily, they put up these handy signs to lead the way.

They were informative and amusing.

Can't beat that! I think it also should have said, "set phasers to kill!" But that may have been over the top.

space punks booth

Those of you who read my WonderCon review will recognize this character. It's my friend Josep Blas creator of the hilarious comic book Space Punks. He had a nice set up here with plenty of room to display his stuff.

Daniel and Josep

Here I am on the right of Josep. I was there as backup, a very important office. Who do you think got those coffees? You guessed it, moi! I was also a good luck charm seeing as he made a few sales once I arrived. Booyah! I'm lucky to have Josep show me what the conventions are like. One day I may have my own comics on display.

james

We were visited by our pal and co-worker James. He took some awesome pictures of the show and was kind enough to let me share them with all of you!

star wars gunnerThe Space Punks table was in the Web Comics section because Josep was announcing the launch of his new Space Punks web comic. It's like a companion to the printed comic books. The strips feature the Space Punks characters in there childhood years growing up in an orphanage together.

We were right next to the table where the local chapter of the 501st were set up. If you haven't heard, the 501st are a hardcore Star Wars costume organization. They do conventions all over the country and other special events.

Here is one of them dressed as a Death Star Gunner, you know, one of the soldiers who fires the big planet destroying laser beam! In Josep's poster of the lineup of "unusual suspects" he did an homage to this character. So we couldn't help but take advantage of this photo opp. He even did the same pose. What a trooper!

But it's not just the Imperial forces that like Space Punks.

chewbacca

Everyone's favorite Wookie, Chewbacca, was kinda enough to pose with the poster featuring one of his long lost cousins. All the kids who see this poster ask "Hey is that Chewbacca?" Josep just says, "Nah, but it was inspired by him."

Chewie really loved the poster too. In fact, we were afraid if we tried to take it back from him he'd pull our arms off! But no, he's actually quite nice in person. And a lot taller than you'd think.

After all the excitement meeting Star Wars legends, I left Josep to work his magic at the table alone while I went around to take pictures of the other exhibitors.

Main Exhibitors

C2E2 was large and in charge when it came to flashy booths from the big publishers. DC, Marvel, Dark Horse and even Archie had great displays.

dc comics

The DC booth had some stunning banners. Here's the Dark Knight lookin' fierce and ready to kick butt and take names.

superman dc

The Man of Steel soaring overhead in this banner. I wonder why he is wearing that L ring. Does that stand for Luthor? Hmm, maybe I should catch up on my Superman lore.

dc joker

Hey don't laugh! It's the Joker. And he looks menacing in this Alex Ross illustration.

marvel booth

Attention true believers, here is the Marvel booth. Sing along, "Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a flashy booth...with Spiderman, Wolverine and the rest all here on Marvel's Isle." That was a Gilligan's Island joke for those of you who had a real life growing up and didn't get raised by Nick at Nite. Seriously, Marvel pimps out Wolverine way too much and the other characters are overlooked. The majority of the titles they print have him on the cover. I guess they know what they're doing. The guy moves comic books like cranberry sauce at thanksgiving.

iron man

Logan may have a run for his money though. Their new golden boy is actually red. I'm talking of course about Iron Man. The success of the first movie and the much anticipated sequel is generating a lot of buzz. Here fans are getting a sneak peak at the new Iron Man 2 video game.

dark horse

The Dark Horse booth had new offerings including issues of The Guild, Aliens and my personal favorite the hugely popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics!

archie

O Jugghead what have you gotten yourself into this time? It's the Archie comics booth. Yes they are known for their Archie series but they also had sample of their Sonic the Hedgehog, Josie and the Pussycats and Sabrina the Teenage Witch comics. I hear a new character in the Archie series is going to be openly gay. Way to go Archie comics. Kudos.

archaia

Archaia was giving out piles of swag and were by far the most generous booth at C2E2. Sample comics of Mouse Guard and Fraggle Rock posters were the hottest items. Sadly they ran out pretty fast.

fathom

Aspen comics was serving up views of their delicious art. Titles like Fathom and Soul Fire have beautiful illustrations and interesting characters. All the dudes love the sexy Aspen Matthews.

funimation

Watch anime? Then you probably have Funimation to thank for that. They are one of the big anime importers and producers. They are especially known for the Cartoon Network's Toonami programming block with titles such as DragonBall Z leading the pack.

scott pilgrim

Not just a Japanese demon anymore, Oni Press is climbing the ranks with some hit titles. This includes the most awesome Scott Pilgrim series. If you haven't read these graphic novels yet, stop what you are doing and go out and find them. I'm serious, I'll wait...

Back already? Good, I know you'll love 'em. They have a new Scott Pilgrim movie coming out this summer I believe. It looked good, but I'm always apprehensive when Hollywood turns a book I love into a movie. I just know they are gonna fuck it up. Hopefully not in this case. Fingers crossed.

nintendo

Not just comic book publishers had stellar booths at C2E2. Nintendo also knew this was a perfect venue to show off its sweet new products to its target demographic.

nintendo games

Here are the interactive Nintendo DS game stations. This kid is trying out the new Wario Ware D.I.Y. game. Players get to design their own games in the game. I don't know how that works but it sounds promising.

ds xl

Nintendo was also there to give us all a look at the new DS XL. This portable system is larger than the DS lite and has a larger screen. Hmm, usually technology companies are coming out with smaller and smaller gadgets so what gives guys? Oh well, I guess the bigger screen is nice even if you can't fit it in your pocket anymore.

wario

Oh and Wario was on-site personally drafting tech savvy children into his maniacal video game sweat shop manufacturing scheme of world domination. Bwahaha.

Mkay kids, you ain't seen nothin' yet. This is only part 1 of my fantabulatious C2E2 comic book convention review. Continue on to part 2 for tons of pictures (140 to be precise) of all the sexy costume wearing attendees as well as a look at the tremendously talent artists who had tables at the show.
