San Francisco WonderCon 2010 Review Part 3

After my brief tourist explorations of San Francisco I returned to Wondercon to help my friend Josep with his table. I also took some more pictures of the WonderCon venders. There were plenty of great things to buy at WonderCon. Most only took cash though and the Moscone lobby had two ATM machines but neither one worked. I'm sure the venders who could take credit and debit cards did a lot better in sales.

Comic Books

comics1

Anyway, WonderCon was full of venders selling comic books and original comic book art. Many of the back issues were really inexpensive too.

comics2

Tables like these had boxes filled with delicious comic books. Nom nom nom! Now if only I can find Amazing Spiderman issue numbe 39 with the special foil stamped marvel logo in the corner! (I think I just made that up).

comics3

Several comic book venders had backdrops like this with the comic covers facing out. I think it looked nice. Usually the issue number 1's or other special titles were on display.

food court

I also took this shot of the little food area along the back wall of the show. Why? Just to give you all a feel for what it was like at the convention. It was often very crowded in the aisles but this little area was a kind of oasis. It was the eye of the nerd storm. I sat here a few times just to chill and people watch. (plus my cold had my life meter drained to just half a heart icon). There was a food station near here but they only were opened for a few hours each day. Outside in the lobby was a Starbucks cafe but even a water there cost 4 dollars. No kidding. Most people brought in Subway sandwiches cuz it was the only fastfood restaurant near the show.

tshirts

I visited WonderCon and all I got was this bad ass t-shirt! Yea this is a giant cube of t-shirts. Just about every comic character, cartoon character, pop-culture phrase and fanboy movie was represented in these shirts. They were awesome. I don't think these are clasifiable as chick magnets though. So if you're into the casual sex you may want to shop elsewhere partner.

Toys

neon monster

This booth was very eye grabbing. I think it had something to do with the 10 foot one eyed monster in it. Just a guess though. I learned this guy's name is Mitch and he is the mascot of a cool store in San Francisco called Neon Monster that specializes in comics, graphic novels, extra special toys and art. The people at the booth were really nice. Maybe they'd let me borrow Mitch sometime. I have a few bullies from grade school I'd like to look up. bwahaha.

mighty muggs 2

Okay Mighty Mugg collectors, if this sight isn't enough to give you a joygasm I don't know what will.

mighty mugs1

Perhaps these handmade, one of a kind Teen Titan Mighty Muggs will do the trick. They sure got me more than a little excited. These were created by Mike and April Mendez and I think they are incredible.

action figures

This vender had just about every Star Wars figure ever as well as tons of other cool stuff. The items covering the entry way here are matchbox toys of the characters from Pixar's Cars. I hadn't realized these were that big of a deal. Apparently to kids these things are like crack. I spent most of my convention spending money at this one vender. And what all did I get you ask...

toys

All kinds of neato stuff. I got a cool Yoshi figure, a few Star Wars droids, some video game plushies and a nice trade paperback. I admit I used to be more of a collector of things but now I only get stuff if I know I have a spot for it in my apartment.

star wars

The Star Wars figures I bought are all droids, Astromechs to be specific. I have a tiny shelf of just Astromechs above my computer at home. (Was that your geek detector beeping, yea you got a live one right here).

mario

Now these bad boys give me more street cred and cool points, least I think they do. I already had a plush Sonic the Hedgehog sitting all lonely on my DVD stand at home. Now he has his heterosexual life partner Tails (Miles Prower) and everyone's favorite spaghetti slurping plumber Mario to keep him company.

scrooge

The trade paperback I got is this collection of classic Scrooge McDuck comics by Don Rosa. I have loved Scrooge since first watching him on Ducktails everyday after first grade as I ate my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I can't wait to read this.

I didn't spend too much cash and there was a lot of stuff I wanted to buy but didn't. I had a fun time looking at all the cool stuff though and talking with the talented artist who had their work on display. I guess that's what these conventions are really all about.

There you have it friends. I hope you enjoyed my epic review of the San Francisco 2010 WonderCon. Next up Josep and I went to C2E2 in Chicago. Follow the link to check out my review of that convention too. C2E2 had much bigger displays from Marvel, DC and Nintendo as well as a lot more costumed people, artists and more. I have hundreds of great pics from that con, you have to check it out!
