Frito-Lay Munchies
That's right, Frito-Lay Munchies are my new favorite snack. The concept behind it is brilliant. Take several popular snacks and combine them in one perfect bag of crunchy bliss. Just thinking about this may not bring your mouth to a pavlovian slobber, but once you have dug into a bag of Munchies you will need to join a twelve step program if you even hope to cure your addiction. Just open up a bag of Munchies for your friends and you will have an instant party in the house. That's the power of Munchies. They bring on the noise in a big way!
Here is the anatomy of a typical bag of Munchies. You get Doritos, Cheetos, Rold Gold Pretzels and Sun Chips all in one beautiful bag. As you can see the Doritos and Sun Chips are mini versions of what you normally would get in a regular bag of those snacks. But the mini size makes it all blend together so much better.
Most of the Cheetos are the same size as usual though some are smallish. The pretzels are standard mini pretzels. I must say I don't usually just go for a bag of pretzels by themselves unless there is some aerosol cheese product waiting to be squirted on them. But Munchies has revitalized my appreciation for the humble pretzel. Perhaps the extra flavoring dust adds to that appeal. That brings up another interesting thing about Munchies. The flavors of each individual snack is present but there is also this overall flavor that affects everything in the bag. It's hard to explain unless you try some. For example, if you have one of the Cheetos it tastes like a Cheeto, but with a hint of Doritos and Sun Chips flavoring as well. It's this mix of flavors and textures that makes Munchies one of humankind's greatest achievements. I highly recommend you go grab a bag and try them for yourself. I am not sure if this is going to be a limited time merging of the four classic snacks. I hope it will be around forever. One thing I don't advise you do is sit down with the whole open bag. It is waaaay to easy to just devour them all in one sitting. If you don't want to gain twenty pounds for goodness sake just put some out in a small dish or something. For reals, they should put a message on the bag warning how good they are.
The only complaint I have about Munchies is that the Sun Chips don't hold up as well as the other snacks in the bag. By nature Sun Chips are more prone to crumble even in bags of just Sun Chips. Putting them in with Cheetos and Pretzels is like putting a blown glass Christmas ornament in a drying machine with a hand full of rocks. What comes out doesn't look like what went in. Still, this isn't that big of a deal because it all goes to the same place. Like Fat Bastard from Austin Powers always says "Get in my belly!" Munchies currently come in three different flavor varieties. There is Cheese Fix, which I tend to think of as the standard flavor of Munchies. There is also Munchies Flamin' Hot for all us hot and spicy lovers out there. Finally there is the more conservative but still sexy Totally Ranch variety. If you're a fan of the Cool Ranch Doritos then these will be like coming home again.
Here is a fun experiment. Take a bag of Munchies to your friends house and time how long it takes for the bag to be totally consumed. Trust me the clock's big hand won't get one quarter around the dial before there is nothing but flavor dust in the bottom of the bag. So enjoy a bag of Munchies. Just don't blame me when you're sellin' your mom's television just to pay for another hit. I warned you they are addictive. :-) -Dan |
